Trent Willmon Knows the Secret to Successful Grilling

Memorial Day is traditionally the unofficial kickoff of summer, and for many, the first big barbecue day of the season. Country singer Trent Willmon has been honing his skills on the grill for years. The former caterer even makes his own barbecue sauce. “I have been making my own barbecue sauce since I was a teenager,” he says. “My grandma made her own, as well as my mom, uncles, cousins, aunts. It’s sort of a family tradition. We love barbecue and we love sauce!”

Willmon’s concoction is such a crowd pleaser, you just might see it on the supermarket shelves soon. “We are in the process of getting the manufacturing company to get it just right. I am very particular, and it ain’t hitting the shelves until it is exactly like my sauce,” he says. “But we are close, so keep an eye on our Web site.”

The seasoned griller released a new album, Broken In, earlier this year, and now he’s willing to break the silence about the secret for savory outdoor entrees.

“The secret isn’t really a secret,” Willmon says. “Everyone knows that time and temperature control are everything, just like any kind of cooking. The difficulty is in knowing your particular grill or smoker and being able to adjust accordingly. If I go to your house and use your grill, it may cook hotter than mine and I might burn the steaks. So spend time and get to know the grill. Nothing can take the place of experience. And it gives you a great excuse to be outdoors and have a cool one!”
