Ludwig van Beethoven

Those of you who listen to the music on my playlist, have by now heard music by Ludwig van Beethoven at least once or twice. I've read about this complicated man and seen a movie or two about his life. I have more time these days to read and as a result, I have had time to really find out what Beethoven was all about. Most of it is sad and I feel sorry for him. His first teacher was his father, who reportedly was a harsh instructor. After nights of drinking he would come home and pull young Ludwig out of bed to practice until morning. His mother died when he was l6, and due to his father's worsening alcohol addiction, he was responsible for raising his two younger brothers. Eventually he moved to Vienna and earned a reputation as a piano virtuoso. His patrons loved his music and supported him in the beginning. Beethoven's hearing gradually deteriorated, beginning in his twenties, yet he continued to compose masterpieces even after he was deaf. The Missa Solemnis in D Major, Op. 123 was composed by Beethoven from 1819-1823. It is generally considered to be one of the composer's supreme achievements. I have a corbel on the wall of my office, with a bust of Beethoven sitting on it. He looks disturbed and troubled....and the truth of the matter is, he was.........
